My sister in law founded and directed a very successful non-profit called Dance Place in Washington DC for over 30 years. Her husband collected new, gently used and not so gently used T-shirts that represent programs at Dance Place and groups that performed there over the years and commissioned this queen sized quilt as a surprise for their 20th wedding anniversary. I was daunted and then inspired and pleased to be part of this creation. I said “never again,” BUT my dining room table has been turned over to my own personal collection of Tees in the hopes that I will have similar success. What are you doing with your T-shirts or your grandkids’?

What does a fabric junkie do when a pandemic hits and area nursing homes, hospitals and neighbors have no PPE to enable them to proceed safely? This one teamed up with her neighbor and we worked our way through our stashes of fabric giving them to any place or person who asked. Two sewing machines imploded but are back safely from the edge and turning themselves back to other creative messes.

At last I have finished Hannah’s vest. Custom fit for her. Luscious chenille with a hint of glitz. There’s a turquoise one at my Open Studio this weekend , Nov 23,24.

Name that rug

I need to name all my weavings. This photo shows the fabric used (apples on blue background) to weave the rug. So do I call the final piece “Rotten Apples”? It looks like chili peppers or lobsters to me. Your thoughts are welcome.

Last week I visited a painter’s studio who had lots of slashes and splashes of red in his work and somehow I have been seeing red a lot lately: Falling leaves, picking apples….seeing red; news of the day: gun violence, inept politicians….seeing red; relationship struggles….seeing red; Christmas pressures and pleasures….seeing red. So I have started a series of 2′ by 3′ area rugs or wall hangings that have my own slashes and splashes of red.

This is work I started doing at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina this summer. I got to study with two inspiring fabric artists who work in surface design. This silk scarf started out white, was resist dyed with one color and came out with four colors! Pretty much fun and often full of surprises…happy accidents.

Please join me for a special Shoreline ArtsTrail event hosted by Madison’s Friends & Company Restaurant on Sunday, November 11 from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. We’re celebrating the kick-off of Open Studios Weekend with this Opening Reception featuring my art, as well as that of other ArtsTrail members: Pat Miller, Jane Novick, Scott Paterson, Diana Perron, Pat Rist, Barbara Shulman-Kirwin, Sandy Spahr, Marjorie Sopkin, Maureen Squires, and Diane Wright! This is a great opportunity to preview this year’s Open Studios artists, sample some of Friends & Company signature offerings and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine.

This Friends & Company event kicks off the Shoreline ArtsTrail’s 11th annual Open Studios Weekend, November 17 and 18, 2012, with 47 participating artists in Branford, Guilford and Madison. The event is free and open to the public. Art will be on display and for sale through the month of November, with all proceeds directly benefiting the artists.

November 17-18, 2012, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Be sure to stop by my studio during the 11th annual Open Studios Weekend, November 17 and 18, 2012. In total, 47 artists from Branford, Guilford, and Madison are participating in this two-day event, presenting works in cut paper, engraving, fiber, found objects, glass, goldsmithing, jewelry, metal, paint, pastels, photography, pottery, printmaking, sculpture, stained glass, and textiles.

I’m number 17 on the Shoreline ArtsTrail Map, which you can pick up at libraries, town halls and visitors’ centers in Branford, Guilford and Madison, as well as at the Guilford Art Center and the various studios.
